FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS

Dimensions: 3.5 x 7 x 3 m
Materials: Hay, steel frame

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a sculpture of transformation and profound humanism. Its core concept reverses a tragic historical pattern: while bells were once melted down to forge cannons for war, Ernő Bartha turns the cannon into a bell. The instrument of destruction is thus transfigured into a voice for peace and spiritual unity.
Symbolism and Form:
The Voice of Peace: A functional metal bell hangs within the mouth of the sculpture, allowing it to be rung. It is not merely a visual object but a sonorous monument that resonates with the message of human solidarity.
Two Mediums: The work exists as a bronze small sculpture, carrying the weight of classical commemoration, and as a monumental hay installation, which stands as a central symbol of the Arkhai Sculpture Park.
Legacy and Present: Exhibited in Sibiu during its time as the European Capital of Culture (2007), the statue now resides in Vlaha. Every year, it tolls for the anniversary of the 1848 Revolution, but it also rang out on the day the Russo-Ukrainian war broke out, serving as a solemn protest against aggression.
“…never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” (John Donne)
